2021-10 World Food Day 2021
Tomorrow, 16th October, is World Food Day 2021, the awareness day organised each year by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) in order to promote actions to ensure sustainable and healthy diets for all, especially for those who suffer from hunger.
EU Specialty Food Ingredients joins this celebration and recognises the importance of sustainable agri-food systems in our life as they can lead to better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life.
We do all have a role in the transformation of the agri-food systems to achieve healthier and more sustainable diets. The world’s food systems are currently responsible for more than 33% of global anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions.1 By following responsible manufacturing practices, the specialty food ingredients industry contributes to efficient operations while minimizing carbon footprint.
Moreover, 14% of the world’s food is lost due to inadequate harvesting, handling, storage and transit and 17% is wasted at consumer level.1 Specialty food ingredients play a key role in safely sustaining the desired taste and texture of a huge variety of foods, thus extending shelf life and helping to reduce food waste.
