2017-09 EU Specialty Food Ingredients experts interviewed by FAO on impact of Codex for businesses

Present at the last meeting of the Codex Alimentarius Committee, Dirk Cremer, Chair of EU Specialty Food Ingredients’ working group dedicated to the Codex Committee on Food Additives (CCFA) and Huub Scheres, Vice-Chair of this task force, were interviewed by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) about the importance of Codex and its impact on businesses. This was the opportunity for them to highlight aspects that are crucial for the specialty food ingredients industry, such as the growing need for international food standards in a globalised world or the role of Codex approvals to support innovation.

As a Codex Observer, EU Specialty Food Ingredients submits applications (i.e. for new substances, extensions of use) at Codex level or comments on Codex consultations that are related to specialty food ingredients and their use. Also, our federation regularly attends a number of Codex meetings, such as the sessions of the CCFA, which are held every year in China, or sessions of the Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses (CCNFSDU) that take place in Germany. To guide our members through the Codex procedures, our CCFA working group has developed a “How to Become Codex Hero” Guide, which is available here. This developing activity within our federation reflects our members’ growing need to be heard and successful on this international arena.
