2018-12 EU Specialty Food Ingredients at the 40th Session of the Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses (CCNFSDU)
During the year the EU Specialty Food Ingredients contributed to the development of Codex standards and guidelines in several electronic working groups established within the CCNFSDU for 2018, as well as during the physical working group meeting on the development of a Guideline for Ready to Use Therapeutic Foods (RUTF) which was held ahead of this year’s Session.
During the Session, besides the recommendations for development of the RUTF Guideline, the Committee discussed the recommendations prepared by the other working groups where EU Specialty Food Ingredients actively participates: e-working group on the review of the Codex Standard for Follow-up Formula, on establishment of a Codex nutrient reference values in relation to non-communicable disease (NRV-NCD) for OMEGA-3 fatty acids, and for developing a framework for considering the technological justification of food additives for inclusion on the JECFA priority list.
Apart from the topics with designated working groups, the busy agenda of the Session included also other items closely followed by EU Specialty Food Ingredients, namely the discussion on the proposed draft claim for “free” of Trans Fatty Acids, proposal for a new work on general guidelines to establish nutritional profiles as well as a proposal for a new work on harmonized probiotic guidelines for use in foods and dietary supplements.
